Background
WEB Leonard Kevin Bias (November 18, 1963 – June 19, 1986) was an American college basketball player for the Maryland Terrapins. In the last of his four years with Maryland, Bias was named ACC Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American.
Tragic Death
On June 19, 1986, Bias died from cardiac arrhythmia induced by a cocaine overdose. The news of his death shocked the sports world and cast a dark shadow over the NBA Draft, where he had been selected second overall by the Boston Celtics.
Legacy
Bias's death became a catalyst for increased awareness of the dangers of drug abuse. His mother, Lonise Bias, became a motivational speaker and advocate for drug prevention.
In 2021, Netflix released a documentary titled "Len Bias: A Life Cut Short," which explored his life and legacy.
